Skateboarding Shoes

Special precautions should be undertaken to avoid hazards that come with the extreme sport of skateboarding. One of the major safety precautions involved includes wearing the appropriate pair of shoes, skateboard shoes, which are specially designed for no other purpose.

With special equipment used to protect the head, the elbows and knees, skateboarders oftentimes forget one of the most important body parts used for the sport – the feet. Skateboarding shoes are designed specifically to protect the most hardworking part of a skateboarder's body.

People generally think that any old pair of rubber shoes would fit the bill. But this is certainly not the case. While regular sneakers may seem to be adequate, they do not provide the same traction and the right protection that skateboarding shoes provide. With the traction that skateboarding shoes give, maneuverability is easier to maintain between the skateboard and the skateboarder.

Selecting the proper skateboarding shoes involves only four key elements. You just need to consider these four to be able to ride safe, to ride with confidence.

First and foremost, a good pair of skateboard shoes should be able to provide adequate protection for your foot at the right points. They should have the Ollie protection feature which allows the skateboarder to perform all the tricks and stunts without losing mobility. In this sense, skateboard shoes are both durable and flexible enough for the feet to be able to move freely, transitioning quickly from one stance to the next. A good area of coverage using the Ollie feature should include the bulk of the toe area, if not the whole area entirely.

The next thing to consider is the shoelace on the skateboard shoes. Skateboarding shoelaces should not easily break apart when subjected to stress. Normal shoelace would easily get ripped off after a days worth of skateboarding. The material used for making the skateboard shoelaces should be extra durable, ready to face any challenge that may be encountered. The stringing arrangement for every shoe should leave the shoelace inside avoiding unnecessary exposure to prevent tripping leading to potentially serious accidents.

Even with the extra durability and other safety features required from skateboarding shoes, they should still be able to offer the comfort any regular pair of sneakers could give. This is especially important during extended periods of wear. The skateboarder should be comfortable enough to continue with the constant pounding of his feet on the board. Uncomfortable shoes would generally cause blisters and sores. This may be felt within a couple of hours into the grind. This will hurt the skateboarder and hinder his performance on his signature tricks and prevent him from refining his moves on the board.

Lastly, one should never forget to consider the grip of the particular pair of skateboard shoes. The traction that the shoes have should be enough to ensure that the rider is able to control his skateboard efficiently. The soles of the shoes should be made of materials that offer the maximum grip. Soles with this type of traction are usually made of gum. These are generally recommended for skateboarders to avoid potential accidents due to slipping.
