Pro Surfer - Jamie O'Brien

Well ask anyone with an interest in the world of surfing and they'll tell you. Jaime was born on June 9, 1983. He was born and raised in Hawaii and currently lives in Haleiwa. He's 6'1" tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. Jaime has said that he was extremely fortunate as a child to grow up near Pipeline. He is one of the youngest surfers ever to win a Pipe Masters challenge. He prides himself on being alcohol and drug free. He says he never got into the party scene and always preferred surfing and striving to be the best at that.

Jamie's father was a life guard and Jamie has said that one of the things that got him interested in surfing at a young age was talking to many of the regular surfers on his dads beach who came to accept him and offer encouragement like surfers like Dane Kealoha and Marvin Foster.

He's been surfing professionally for many years and has participated on numerous teams and in numerous contests. Some of his earlier contest accomplishments were Pipeline Masters in 2001 in which he took 4th place even after just recovering from a knee injury, Hansen's Pipeline Pro in 2003 in which he took first place. He has stated that beating Bruce in this competition was one of the greatest moments in his career. Jaime also took first place in Fosters Expression Trestles and Rip Curl Pipeline Masters in 2004.

He has made two films, Freakshow and Freaside, which are considered number one blockbusters to anyone it the surf world. Jaime produced them both. Freakside was filmed while traveling around the world with Tim Reardon filming him. Jaime then made the many separate film clips into Freakside. Other movies he's been in include Step Into Liquid and Blue Crush. He has made television appearances on MTV's Boarding House/Stunt Surfer in 2005. Video and DVDs that he's been in include Waxed Planet in 2005, Raising the Bar, Super Computer, The Mystic, The Next Generation and Califragulistic in 2004. In 2005 he made Campaign 2 and in 2006 as previously mentioned Freakside.

Jaime has had many impressive sponsors over his time surfing also, including Boost Mobile, Gorilla Grip, FCS, KMC Wheels, Utopia Optics, Red Bull, Victoria Skimboards and of course Rusty Surfboards.

Although Jaime won many contests one way he established himself at the top of the surfing world is by winning the Boost Breakthrough Performance Award at Surfer Magazine's Surfer Awards show in 2005. He has said he loves to be in the spotlight.

Jaime has said the one person who guided and encouraged him the most was always his dad. He says his dad truly is his hero and they have a unique relationship more like best friends than that father and son. His father has taken over a position sort of like manager in that he negotiates his contracts for him.

Jaime says with all his notoriety now he gets his first choice of waves at Pipeline now, well, as long as another well known local Tamayo Perry isn't out there also. He's stated in interviews that he really enjoys s surfing with Tamayo and feeling like they're just two local guys having fun.

He says one of the best things about his life is living at Pipeline and being able to look out a window of his home and seeing it. He plans on buying a house on the beach and to always live there and continue to surf Pipeline until he dies.
